Brandall – I’m just up the road from you. Give me a call (661.312.3910) and I’d be happy to come down and see what can be done in terms of doing a removal and rehiving.
Max MorganParticipantI find placing a wet sponge in the bottom of the swarm box helps to keep the bees hydrated. Otherwise, they dehydrate quickly and die of thirst. I also spray the swarm with sugar water which provides a temporary food source.
Max MorganParticipantChris – I think 917 is a New York City area code. Where are you located? I gave away 2 swarms today to a professional beekeeper. Instead, I’d rather give them to a newbee.
Max MorganParticipantThe swarm is spoken for.
Max MorganParticipantBoth hives are spoken for.
Max MorganParticipantOne hive is already spoken for. I should also mention that they are both good honey producers.
Max MorganParticipantBees are spoken for.
Max MorganParticipantMichael – Sounds good! I just grabbed another, much heavier swarm. The swarming season has started about 3 weeks early up here. Give me a call if you need some more bees. (661) 312-3910

Max MorganParticipantBees are taken!
Max MorganParticipantKirk – If you are willing to make the drive to Valencia, I can help you out. Post your number and I’ll give you a call the next time I grab a swarm or do a removal. I have put several bees up for adoption on Honeylove and BBK in the past but have only had one taker willing to make the drive North.
Max MorganParticipantWith this crazy, unseasonable warm weather we’ve been having, I think Spring has already sprung. I’ve had 3 swarm calls in the last 2 weeks. Normally it doesn’t get busy in the SCV until March.
Max MorganParticipantOne and all, many thanks for the feedback. I think I have decided to add a Bushkill Beevac to my equipment. I watched the Bushkill videos and really liked what I saw. I can see already it will save me a lot of travel time in the field on doing rechecks and recovering nuc boxes from job sites. With this crazy warm weather we’ve been having, bees are already starting to get active again in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Max MorganParticipantWhat are the specifics on the proposed policy for live bee removal?
Max MorganParticipantKarim – you might want to try something called “gaiters” that hikers wear to keep ticks off their ankles and rocks out of their shoes. I wear a pair that have plastic plates in them for rattlesnake protection when I hike “off trail”. You can find them at at Sport Chalet, Rei etc. Overstock.com also has them. Here’s a link:

Max MorganParticipantAlice – bees can fly up to a 5 mile radius. I’m not sure that relocating bees on, as you say, “a small property”, is really going to exonerate you from any neighbor liability issues. They should probably be completely removed from your property. Case in point: I assisted on a removal over the summer where the homeowner was actually cited by the County for aggressive bees after a nearby neighbor had complained.
