Congratulations on your success here, Enci, with wonderful help from Elisha! If I were you, I’d consider posting your story under a new title, something like “Baited hive-next steps” to get additional advice on what to do next from some of the other wonderful mentors on this forum. This is a subject I would like to know more about, too!

    Susan,
Ha! If I was in Florida I guess they might be “gators”! Thanks–you’ve given me lots of good info. I’ll probably invest in a full suit, one that won’t melt!

I’ve been borrowing a neighbor’s fencing style suit for inspecting my hive, and now–despite cost considerations–I’m looking at getting my own suit or jacket. Is there a particular brand y’all prefer? Do I need a full suit or can I get away with a jacket and jeans with velcro leg straps or gators? I don’t want to be penny-wise and pound foolish, but I’m also not getting into the cut-out business or anything extreme–that I know of! I just need something to wear while tending and inspecting my hives.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I have a Langstroth 10-frame deep box that I don’t need anymore (with 4 frames). Anyone want to trade for a 10-frame medium?

I find it hard to believe that any true professional would set up a hive for someone who didn’t originally show promise and dedication to beekeeping.

A bee hive is NOTHING like a puppy or kitten, and yet, animals end up in shelters when the owners no longer want them or cannot care for them. People are often unrealistic about their willingness to even do the work necessary to raise their own children!

In my experience, however, not all bee mentors have the same degree of professionalism as Ruth Askren. After being set up with a hive by our original bee person, it was only through lots of research that we discovered better ways (more natural) to care for our hive. We feel very fortunate to have found Ruth. Since last May, she has worked with us to undo “damage” caused by misinformation–and noninformation–from the original bee guy.
