In need of Part Time Beekeeper

The Best Bees Company is in need of beekeepers interested in managing hives, building equipment, harvesting, and making sales. Positions are part time as needed, offering at least 12-15 hours per month for hive checks with an opportunity to work more if desired. As the business grows in each city we hope to offer full time, salaried positions with benefits so getting in now can put you on track for this once positions become viable. Being able to work independently without direct supervision is a MUST. Having space to host hives and equipment is not required, but a plus.

Start dates are April 2016 at the latest, but individuals interested in sales work may start ASAP. Positions are as needed without an end date. Pay is $10-$15/hour depending on experience and background. Commissions are available for those interested in sales work.

You’ll be working often on your own under direction from a remotely located manager. This is a very fun job with lots of opportunity for growth and advancement. That being said, at the moment our operations are pretty small in Los Angeles with limited funding. You will often have to work alone, store equipment at home and be our on call for handling emergencies. It will require a very independent and driven person to work with us as our operations grow. If you stick around this investment may be repaid with full time positions once viable.

To give you an idea of where this can go, our operations in Boston include the management of over 600 hives for almost 300 clients. We have 8 full time, nonseasonal staff and employed a peak of 31 staff this season. 2015 saw our national expansion to 9 cities across the US after five years of being in business.

Of note, we are a treatment free organization that uses only sugar based solutions for feeding. We don’t mind what you choose to do in your personal hives, but if this will be an ethical dilemma for you then we may not be the right place to work.

Ah—I see someone must have directed you to post this on the Bulletin Board, where sales and offers are usually located.
A few things might be helpful to add, because of the nature and philosophy of this club—how are these bees sourced? Are they package bees? Are you re-queening with purchased queens as part of management? Are these bees kept on foundation? Do you feed supplements besides sugar? Do you use queen excluders or allow unlimited brood nest?
