    Hi there Honey Lovers,

I have collected 3 swarms in the last week. All are in hive boxes in which I placed comb with honey and some brood from one of my other hives to get them started.

Swarm #1 was collected last 4/13/16 in Hermosa bch. They seem to be settling into their new 10 frame medium hive box just fine. Average on the aggressive scale when smoked. They have a frame of honey and brood.

Swarm #2 was collected on 4/17/16 in El Segundo. This was a large swarm and I placed them into a deep hive box. They are average on the aggressive scale. The queen tried to bolt on me 3 times while I was inserting the swarm into their new home before I finally got her to stay. They have a frame of honey and brood.

Swarm #3 was collected off of Dockweiler Beach on 4/17/16. This was an average size swarm and gave me no problems at all. They have been placed into a medium size box with a frame of honey.

All the swarms I collect I will keep for about 3 weeks to make sure they are getting settled in, and the queen laying brood.
I am using queen excluders to keep the queens in and prevent them from reswarming.
Also I will give away the bees as a whole unit with their new hive box. The only money I ask for will be for the cost of the box, frames, paint, baseboard, and topboard/roof, etc. $75.00. The queen excluder is Not included.

If you are interested or know someone who is give me a call at (310) 625-7873
    Thanks, Mike

Hi, Mike—I don’t know if you are aware, but the mission of HL is to encourage best practices for the urban environment where most of the public are not beekeepers. By posting this with no mention of asking about preparation by a potential adopter, we could appear to be promoting passing off bees to anyone who responds, whether educated or with a mentor or not. Do you have a mentor or are you arranging for responders to your post to be mentored by you in beekeeping? There have been some serious mishaps in the club in the past when bees were taken on without adequate preparations and education—animals killed, neighbors stung, visits from the fire department resulting in hives killed by foaming, that kind of thing—and we want to be responsible and careful going forward. With the adoption of the new LA city beekeeping code, it is very important to emphasize strong educational development and safe practices for urban beekeeping. The many folks strongly against the adoption of the code are watching carefully for the incidents they predicted of mismanagement.
By the way, are you coming to the meeting on Sunday? HL has one every last Sunday of the month and it is a good opportunity to interact with the bee community.

    Hi Susan,
I do understand the mission of Honey Love and am 100% behind it. Thanks for reiterating it again though.

If you noticed in my email I said that I would be holding onto the swarms for a while to make sure they had settled in. I am not going to pass on bees to just anyone, especially a swarm of bees. That does not do them or us any favors. I purposely kept some things out of my email and asked interested parties to call for a reason. I personally wanted to talk to the interested parties. In our conversation I would ask the pertinent questions that you mentioned and a few more. I feel this is a much warmer and more personable approach than trying to screen somebody through emails. FYI I have been contacted by somebody from Buzzed Honey about the bees and will be talking to them.

With all that Beeing cleared up, let me thank you for the advice you gave me a couple of months ago at one of the meetings. My success rate with swarms is 100% since I have implemented your advice. It even came in handy in transferring my top bar hive over to a Langstroth hive box.

Knowing you live in MB, I almost called you yesterday to see if you could get a swarm a bees that was at Dockweiler Beach. In the end I was able to break free and collect them. Are you up for that kind of thing? Working as a lifeguard at the beach I get notified now almost as soon as a swarm shows up down there, anywhere from Zuma Beach to San Pedro.

Thanks again for showing your concern. If you have any questions feel free to call

Excellent! I just did not know if you would be screening the potential adopters, so being the Forum “chief” it is my job to do these reminders. Yes, I know David Bock—he buys lots of honey from me when I am up in excess. He used to be my student.
I am guessing the “advice” was the queen excluder piece over the entrance.
And, yes, I do pick up swarms quite a bit in the South Bay. Took one today from West LA College. I pick up bees for United at the airfield, as they often turn up on luggage transfer equipment or other equip. at LAX. Instead of exterminating, like they used to do, they just pay me what they used to pay the exterminator, and get to market the “green and sustainable” message with the public.
